BROWNWOOD, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A new reception hall, kitchen and more are coming to the Bennie Houston Recreation Center in Brownwood, thanks to a $1.5 million matching grant.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) awarded a $1,500,000 matching grant to the City of Brownwood, the largest grant the city has received from TPWD.

The City of Brownwood FY 2025–2026 Proposed Budget outlines that the city's match will come from the Bennie Houston special project funds, reserves and future budget year allocations.

"This grant is an investment for the Bennie Houston Recreation Center and the Brownwood community," said Mayor Stephen Haynes. "These renovations will allow us to better serve our residents and provide a safe, welcoming space for recreation, learning, and community gatherings.
