SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Six kids walking down the streets of downtown South Bend, but their stroll comes to an end in front of the East Race Market at around 4:26 in the morning on July 27.
“I get it’s the summertime; I do. But that’s just a little extreme,” says store manager Danielle Potts.
Potts calls what happened next shocking and sad.
The front door was locked, but one of the kids was able to get into the store by scaling a gate and climbing over it.
I asked Potts why the doors were not locked. She says they need to stay open for ventilation.
“On those really, really hot days if we shut those doors, everything just starts molding,” she explains. “Or it can even lead to because it’s so humid in here, I’ve even had my freezers start breaking down.”
