The Texas Legislature is considering making changes to the state’s standardized tests. They should also look at the high stakes that affect school curricula.

Educators and others have long complained about the testing that is intended to measure students’ performance and evaluate whether they are learning at the level deemed appropriate for their age an class groups.

One of the topics on the agenda for the current special legislative session is a proposal to replace the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness with three tests that would be spaced out throughout the school year. Currently STAAR features several tests, but they are given toward the end of the school year.
