GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) - Easley police officer Matthew Hare, who was killed in the line of duty while helping someone in a mental health crisis, was honored at the Rupert Huse Veteran Center.
He joined a courageous group of law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“August 2, 2023, in a single act of bravery, Officer Matthew Hare gave his life so that another could live," said Theresa Thompson, CEO of Upstate Warrior Solution.
It was a tragedy that shook the community. Hare was just 22-years-old when he was hit and killed by a train while trying to help someone on the tracks.
“I will remember Matthew as the kid who always smiled," said Easley Police Chief, Brandon Liner.
Liner said Hare's courageous actions embody the purpose of serving the community.
