President Donald Trump has made comments about taking over D.C. since last summer, when he was still running for his second term.

"We will take over the horribly run capital," Trump said in July 2024.

He's continued making threats about a federal government takeover of the city since taking office in January.

"I think we should take over Washington, D.C., make it safer," he said in February 2025 while on Air Force One. "People are getting killed; people are getting hurt."
