Fort Wayne might need to move more than $1 million into a savings account for potential payouts from wrongful death lawsuits primarily involving police-involved shootings.

The projection came as a representative with a local consulting firm told City Council members this week that 2024 was a "difficult year" for losses.

Jon Griglack, who gave a presentation during Tuesday's council meeting, is an actuary with the liability consulting firm SGRisk.

“You can see the increases are mainly from police professional liability, which is where those wrongful death lawsuits have come from,” he said.

Griglack recommended the city keep $1.08 million in reserves for the potential payouts.
