Asked this week about his ability to take off and run, quarterback J.J. McCarthy joked that he wished the reporter hadn’t brought it up.
“I like to keep that on the low,” McCarthy said with a laugh. “That’s a huge part of my game. It’s a weapon in this league. You kind of have to have it as a quarterback with these edge rushers and the different pressure looks.”
The mobility has been on display several times throughout training camp at TCO Performance Center as McCarthy has proven more than capable of making something happen when the play breaks down.
The biggest challenge for McCarthy now is understanding when to hang in the pocket and when to take off.
“You never want it to speed up the thought process,” McCarthy said. “There’s a time and place for it.”
