MADISON (WKOW) — Gov. Tony Evers has ordered flags in Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff on Saturday, Aug. 9, in honor of U.S. Army Air Forces Private Herbert E. McLaughlin. McLaughlin lost his life during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“Private McLaughlin gave his life defending the values and freedoms we hold most dear," said Evers in a statement. "It is an honor to be able to help welcome Private McLaughlin back to his home to be laid to rest."

McLaughlin was born in Shawano and served during World War II. He was one of 91 men who died at Hickman Field.

His remains were identified in 2024 after being exhumed by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in 2019. He will be buried in his hometown on the same day the flags are lowered.
