(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has increased the presence of federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C. to crackdown on crime, NewsNation has learned.
Federal officers in marked units will be stationed across DC in an operation that will be begin as a 7-day effort with the option to extend as needed, a White House official tells NewsNation.
Led by the U.S. Park Police, they'll descend on the streets at midnight following an 11 p.m. rollcall.
"Washington, DC is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
"President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C."
