ON THIS DAY IN 1927 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The Federal Government has issued, as its part in the State sesquicentennial, the Burgoyne surrender stamp in the four cities of Syracuse, Rome, Utica and Albany. Later the stamp is to be put on sale at every post office in the United States. This is a two-cent stamp commemorating the surrender of General Burgoyne and bears the words Fort Stanwix at the left, Oriskany at the top, Bennington at the right, with the word Saratoga beneath the design. In a panel near the top of the stamp are the words United States Postage in white Roman letters of ribbon scroll. In the upper corner are the years 1777 and 1927.”
