MONTREAL— Victoria Mboko is the National Bank Open champion.
The 18-year-old Canadian beat four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) in Montreal on Thursday to win her first title on the WTA Tour.
Mboko is the first Canadian to win the WTA 1000 event on home soil since Bianca Andreescu won in 2019 . Faye Urban in 1968 is the only other Canadian to win the home event in the open era.
In a heroic final game, Mboko rallied from 40-15 down against Osaka’s serve to win the match, kicking it off with a remarkable rush to the net after the Japanese star just barely touched the ball over. Mboko got there a split-second before the ball bounced a second time and hit it into an open backcourt as the crowd erupted.
