MADISON (WKOW) — Purple Heart Day recognizes military members wounded or killed in combat who have received the Purple Heart Award. The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital marked the occasion by inducting five Wisconsin veterans into its Hall of Honor.

One of the inductees was Lance Cpl. Jacob Meinert, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. His mother, Krista Meinert, accepted the honor on his behalf.

"When he was in middle school, 9/11 happened. And that was it. That was it. There was no talking him out of it," said Krista Meinert. "He was a very, very proud Marine. A very proud Marine."
