DULUTH — City councilors completed a first round of interviews for the open 2nd District seat Thursday evening, thinning the field of candidates from six to three finalists.

The council’s top three choices, in descending order, were:

Deborah DeLuca, who recently retired from her job as the first woman executive director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

Craig Bursch, a structural engineer at TKDA.

Janet Nelson, also a retiree, who was formerly employed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, but then went on to serve as a constituent services representative for Sen. Al Franken.

The council will question the remaining trio of candidates again at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, before deciding who will represent Duluth’s 2nd District for the remainder of this year, until a new councilor
