Las Palmas Medical Center has completed its 500th left atrial appendage occlusion , or LAAO, procedure, a treatment that reduces stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. The procedure involves placing a small implant to close a pouch in the heart where clots can form. Atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder, increases the chance of stroke due to blood pooling in this area.
