LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) - On Thursday, the United States honored the men and women who've sacrificed for the country's freedom. One East Texas assisted living center celebrated National Purple Heart Day by surprising their one of their own residents who's a Purple Heart recipient.

Anyone can see the patriotism that 93-year-old veteran Tom Klotz carries since it's proudly displayed on his Marine hat.

"My heart is all I have for it, I'm blessed, real blessed living in this country," Klotz said.

In 1949, Tom Klotz joined the Marine Corps Reserve and was called to the Korean War for active-duty service in 1951.

"He was in Korea for about eight months, he was a team leader of our tour group," Arabella Longview Veterans Group Leader Fred Winters said.
