TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- It was a close vote by city leaders in Troy to move city hall from the fifth floor of the Hedley Building on River Street to the historic Proctor's Theater on 4th Street. The vote was four to three on party lines to approve the site as a suitable location for city hall, republicans voting for the move, democrats against it.
But before this new location Troy had a few locations for city hall. “Originally, we didn't have a city hall until 1875. We actually shared spaces in what was the Rensselaer County Courthouse,” said the Rensselaer County, Troy City Historian Kathryn Sheehan.
The historian explained Troy was a bustling and growing city back then, “We are one of the wealthiest cities, were heavy into the industries in Troy. We need to have a city hall.”
