Eric Smith won a singles match and doubles match, with Trine Baugh, to account for half of the match victories Thursday for Brownwood, which hosts Mineral Wells at 9 a.m. and Keller Fossil Ridge at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

ABILENE – The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions tennis team came up on the short in Thursday night’s season-opening match at Hardin-Simmons University against Hereford, 15-4.

Securing victories in their matches Thursday were the Lions No. 2 doubles team of Trine Baugh and Eric Smith (6-3, 6-2 over Josh Martinez and Lucas Woodard), Smith in No. 3 boys singles (7-6, 6-3 over Martinez), Aiden Oplotnik in No. 4 boys singles (4-6, 6-4, 10-5 over Woodard), and Eli Hutson and Willow Camp in mixed doubles by default.
