The sky over Megansett Beach late Monday afternoon was other-worldly. The sun shone dully, not through clouds, but through a smoky haze. As sunset approached, the sky took on a sickly-yellow tinge. And when the moon made its appearance that night, it was a startling shade of orange.

As of Wednesday, at least 741 wildfires are burning up in Canada. Of these, 304 are labeled “out of control.”

This is already one of the most destructive years for wildfires in Canada since recordkeeping began in 1983. This fire season ranks second at this point, behind the 2023 Canada wildfire season, which sent plumes of smoke down to the United States and turned the skies over major cities, including New York City, an eerie orange.
