A Croydon construction boss has been slapped with a £7,951 fine after fly tipping waste in the area. Muhammad Ali, 46, from Thornton Heath, pleaded guilty to the offence at Croydon Magistrates' Court . In court he blamed his own inexperience as a renovator and his contractors who he claimed had agreed to properly dispose of the waste.

A local councillor discovered the waste from a renovation on the green between Pollards Hill West and Pollards Hill South in August 2023. Investigations led council officers to Mr Ali's business on London Road.

He failed to provide details of how waste from the building works was taking place, leading to his conviction. Mr Ali was ordered to pay a fine of £890, the Council’s full costs of £6,705.71, and a victim surcharge of £356, totalling £7,951.71.
