The people of Portsmouth have special reason to be proud of elected leaders who serve on our City Council. At a time we need leaders to speak out, despite their risk in doing so, they stood tall, strong and united to defend justice and human rights .

These are unusual and abnormal times for America. Our nation faces unparalleled challenges to our democracy, freedoms, and our way of life. Our Constitution, which many of us thought was clear and firm on protecting our rights, is being reinterpreted, and in some cases ignored.

Some people say city leaders should only focus on issues like budgets, parking, development, outside dining, speed limits, or housing. All important, yes − but nothing's more important than the way we treat one another. Past councils spoke of equality for our LGBT
