A round of rain and clouds tracked across the Eastern Ozarks yesterday, bringing slightly cooler temperatures to areas east of Highway 65. Springfield and points west felt the heat with temperatures reaching the mid-90s. No rain or clouds are expected today, and temperatures will soar.

Today will be hotter and drier as the summer ridge noses northeast through the Ozarks. This shift in the heat dome farther northeast through the Ozarks should shut down the sneaky rain we've seen the past 2 days.

A heat advisory has been issued for Friday afternoon. Temperatures will climb into the upper 90s today with heat index values between 100° and 106°. This may pan out to be the hottest day of the year in Springfield if we reach 98°, beating out 97° measured on July 29 and July 30.
