The U.S. Department of the Interior announced Wednesday that it has canceled the controversial Lava Ridge wind energy project.

The decision followed a January executive order halting further development of the project, which had previously been approved by the Bureau of Land Management in December.

”Following its review, the department discovered crucial legal deficiencies in the issuance of the approval, including unique statutory criteria that were ignored,” the DOI said in a Wednesday statement.

The DOI said the Biden administration’s push to approve the project in December was “misguided” and “last minute,” adding that, under the Trump administration, wind power will receive more scrutiny.
