A small wildfire that broke out on Wednesday (Aug. 6) near John Hart Lake, northwest of Campbell River, is now considered under control.

The wildfire grew to 90 square metres on Aug. 6 and is suspected to have been caused by a lightning strike, according to BC Wildfire Service . No restrictions were in place.

A campfire ban is currently in place across Vancouver Island, including in Campbell River.

The ban applies to all recreational fires, including campfires, backyard fires and beach fires anywhere within the city’s fire protection area. All forms of open burning and the use of items like fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels, and torches – including propane torches meant for weed burning – are not allowed.
