Regarding the letter to the editor " Donald J. Trump is no Dwight D. Eisenhower. Not by a long shot. " (Aug. 5): To the list of things that may help distinguish Eisenhower from current and recent commanders-in chief, who've been drawn from the ranks of bone-spur victims and part-time heroes, I would add two more points:
1. In 1954, right-wing Republicans urged Eisenhower to send help to the French in Vietnam. No, said Ike. No land war in Asia.
2. In 1959, similar patriots urged Ike to send help to the British and French in their fight with Egypt over the Suez Canal. Ike said no, we do not want to occupy a hostile Arab country.
There were plenty of things not to like about Ike — my father, a WWII veteran could not say his name without preceding it with an expletive.
