ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A push is now underway to change the political landscape in Florida with state lawmakers wanting to be part of a new select committee on redistricting.
House Speaker Danny Perez (R–Miami) sent a letter to all 100 state representatives saying the committee will look at redrawing congressional districts as soon as next month.
Republicans say it's a response to a population boom in Florida since the last census but Democrats call it a pure power grab.
The letter from Perez to state representatives says "we will focus our inquiry on the congressional map."
After the 2020 census, Governor Ron DeSantis drew the maps currently in place that gave Republicans four extra seats in the now 20-8 advantage in Florida’s congressional delegation. He vetoed the legislature's maps
