MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough turned up the heat Friday on Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) after the New York Republican tried to dismiss claims that President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act would harm hospitals and kick Americans off Medicaid.

Scarborough asked Lawler how hospitals in his own district will manage the more than $700 billion in cuts to Medicaid included in the OBBBA, with many hospitals in Lawler’s own district projected to be severely impacted. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned this week that Trump’s megabill would see more than $31 million in cuts to New York hospitals.

“This whole notion that is being fostered by Democrats like Hochul, throwing out ridiculous numbers about who's going to lose coverage or the impact on hospitals in New York,” Lawler said. “The fact is, it's bunk.”

Citing projections from the Congressional Budget Office, Scarborough quickly fired back at Lawler’s dismissal.

“Well, respectfully, Mike, the Congressional Budget Office says that it's going to be about $900 billion to $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts,” Scarborough said.

“Hospitals across your district are going to have to cut services, care, staff members and budgets because of your vote and because of this bill, that's what they're saying, it's not some left-wing focus group.”

Lawler’s only response was that claims of New Yorkers losing Medicaid coverage or hospitals losing funding were mere “talking points” from Hochul’s administration, talking points, he said, that were being parroted by various organizations in bad faith.

Scarborough attempted to refute Lawler’s claim, but was repeatedly cut off as the New York Republican attempted to continue speaking.

“Congressman, you can keep talking if you want to, but are you saying you know their business better than they know their own business, is that what you're telling us here?” Scarborough shouted.

“No Joe,” a visibly agitated Lawler said. “If you'd stop putting words in my mouth and let me answer the question! It's all the same points that the Greater New York Hospital Association and the state of New York are parroting.”

The OBBBA is, in fact, projected to see between 11 and 15 million Americans lose Medicaid coverage, increase Medicaid costs for remaining enrollees through increased copays, and collectively cut into hospital revenue from Medicaid patients to the tune of $665 billion over ten years.
