ST. PAUL — Seven candidates are still in the race for two open Minnesota Senate seats to be filled in a special election Nov. 4.
The candidacy filing period ended Wednesday, Aug. 6, for the two seats left open following the resignation of former Sen. Nicole Mitchell from Woodbury and the unexpected death of Sen. Bruce Anderson from Buffalo. Primaries for the seats will take place Aug. 26.
The Senate currently stands at a 33-32 DFL majority. The open seats are for District 29, covering Buffalo and Monticello, and District 47, covering Woodbury.
Neither of the seats is expected to be a swing seat, as Mitchell won her seat in 2022 with 59% of the vote and Anderson won his seat in 2022 with 68% of the vote, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
