A 51-year-old man who killed a bystander when he fired several gunshots inside a dance hall in Lynn was granted parole in a narrow decision by the state’s parole board.

Alfred Jenks was convicted of first-degree murder for the April 1994 shooting and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jenks, who was 20 at the time of the shooting, became eligible for parole when the Supreme Judicial Court ruled life sentences without parole for emerging adults, those between 18 and 20, were unconstitutional.

He made his first appearance before the parole board in March.
