A 12-year-old boy was charged this week after pouring boiling water on his younger brother while he was sleeping as part of a social media trend in July, according to the Lancaster County district attorney’s office.
The boy was charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, prosecutors announced Thursday. As a juvenile, his court records and additional details from the case are not public.
The charges come after Lancaster County police said the boy boiled water in a microwave and poured it on his sleeping 9-year-old brother as part of a dangerous social media prank known as “the hot water challenge” on July 29 in Lancaster Township.
Police said the challenge, which was popularized by YouTube videos, involves pouring boiling water on unsuspecting victims.
