A first impression is really a false start.

The Washington Commanders open the preseason at the New England Patriots on Friday with rookies and reserves. Washington is largely resting veteran starters against the Patriots.

No quarterback Jayden Daniels debuting after his NFC Rookie of the Year effort that led the Commanders to the NFC Championship. No receiver Terry McLaurin still amid a combination injury/holdout. No linebacker Von Miller leading the pass rush.

Coach Dan Quinn intimated after a joint practice against the Patriots on Wednesday that those who worked extensively in those 11 on 11s wouldn’t play two days later. The coach saw enough from the earlier matchup to avoid risking veterans in a preseason game.
