WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump this week reignited his threat that the federal government will take over and "run" Washington, DC, after a former Department of Government Efficiency employee was assaulted in an attempted carjacking.

Trump said Wednesday he is considering having his administration take over the DC Police Department and might deploy the National Guard to DC over recent crime.

After those comments, the White House announced the federal law enforcement presence in the city is increasing starting Thursday night. The effort, a White House official said, will include US Capitol Police, FBI, US Marshals Service, DC Police, DEA and other agencies. It was not immediately clear if the National Guard is a part of the Thursday mobilization.
