JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Back-to-school season means more traffic on local roadways, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is offering tips on how to stay safe on the road during this time.

In 2024, there were 843 traffic crashes in Missouri involving school buses, leading to seven deaths and 345 injuries, according to MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says motorists should be vigilant while driving, especially in school zones, playgrounds, crosswalks and bicycle paths. If a school bus is stopped with flashing lights, you have to stop; it's the law.

Troopers are also reminding students who walk or bike to school to make sure and cross the street only where it is allowed. They're also encouraged to pay attention to traffic signs and signals and use sidewalks when available.
