The Florida Gators ' own Ben Shelton had a career moment on Aug. 7.
Shelton, 22 , won his first-career Masters 1000-level tournament at the National Bank Open, defeating numerous top-level players, including fellow American Taylor Fritz, who made a Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon.
He defeated Karen Khachanov 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3) at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto to win the title, which was a first for an American in a Masters 1000 hard-court event since Andy Roddick in 2003.
"It's a surreal feeling," Shelton said after the win. "It's been a long week, not an easy path to the final. My best tennis came out when it mattered most. I was clutch, I persevered, I was resilient. All the qualities I like to see in myself."
