Researchers at the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht in the Netherlands have released promising new safety data on a study testing an intranasal stem cell therapy in babies who had suffered brain injury just before, during, or shortly after birth.

The study, called PASSIoN, followed ten newborns for two years, all of whom had had a perinatal arterial ischemic stroke—the result of a blood clot in a brain artery. This type of stroke occurs in one in 5,000 to 10,000 newborns , causing brain damage and resulting in lifelong neurological disabilities, including cerebral palsy, behavioral problems, and cognitive and language difficulties.
