Nearly 400 motorists were ticketed for speeding over the long weekend during an OPP enforcement blitz across Northwestern Ontario on two major provincial routes.

The initiative on highways 11 and 17 also suggested some encouraging news about driving behaviour in the region.

Enforcement was stepped up on the routes by provincial patrol officers Aug. 1-4, a provincial news release said on Thursday.

In addition to the speeding offences, 20 people were ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt during the blitz, while 15 drivers were charged with being impaired. In addition, officers cited eight drivers for being distracted behind the wheel.
