MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - Lake Mattoon is closed due to the presence of a harmful algal bloom that can release neurological toxins.

The closure was issued "out of an abundance of caution," the City of Mattoon said. The beach will be closed until further notice, pending more test results from sampling taken Friday.

People are being told to avoid the water.

This comes after the entire city of Mattoon was put under a "Do Not Drink" order due to toxins in the drinking water.

Mattoon City Council approved several plans Tuesday night to help improve water access and quality in the community.

The plans come after two "Do Not Drink" orders were issued in July following a harmful algal bloom that made the water unsafe to drink.
