DUCHESNE — A 14-year-old girl is missing after walking away from her group while backpacking in the Uinta Mountains.

The initial call to report the girl missing came in shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday.

The girl went missing in the Painters Basin area near Kidney Lakes. She was backpacking with a group of about seven family members for a day and a half when the girl walked away from the group to use the bathroom and didn't come back, said Duchesne County Sheriff's Cpt. John Crowley.

Authorities began search efforts Thursday, including a helicopter flying over the area, but the search was eventually thwarted due to high winds. Additionally, Crowley said a couple of different teams are heading up to the area on horseback to search for the girl.
