A second person has died of West Nile virus this summer in South Dakota, according to the state Department of Health's dashboard .
A total of 16 human cases had been reported statewide as of Aug. 8. The dashboard indicates that the deaths happened in Brookings and Marshall counties. The health department has already projected that the state will have enough West Nile cases to classify as an outbreak in 2025.
Nationally, 26 states had reported a total of 140 human cases of West Nile virus as of Aug. 5, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Where have cases of West Nile virus been reported in South Dakota?
