WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - Under a new executive order signed by President Donald Trump Thursday, colleges and universities will be required to submit data to prove they do not consider race in admissions.

The White House says too many colleges are skirting a Supreme Court ruling which says a prospective student’s race cannot be considered during the admissions process.

The new memo requires colleges to report more data in order to prove the transparency of their admissions processes.

If colleges fail to submit timely and accurate data on race and gender, the Education Department can take action under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which can impact federal financial aid for students.
