DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Attorney General’s Office has determined that the fatal shooting of James Young Sherrill on July 1 by Dubuque County and Monticello officers was legally justified.
This conclusion follows an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Officers from the Dubuque Drug Task Force, along with local law enforcement, attempted a traffic stop on Sherrill, who was under investigation for drug activity. Although Sherrill initially complied, he resisted when asked to exit the vehicle. Sergeant Adam Williams intervened as Sherrill attempted to restart his truck.
