Management of classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) can be a lifelong balancing act, but the most feared life-threatening complication is an acute adrenal insufficiency, also known as an adrenal crisis.
Adrenal crises were identified as the leading cause of death in patients with CAH, responsible for up to 42% of excess deaths in a 2014 population-based study .
"A lot of [CAH patients] fear having adrenal crises," said Deborah Merke, MD, MS, of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, at ENDO 2025, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
