BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) -- An aluminum company announced plans this week to boost production at its Berkeley County plant, citing the Trump administration's tariff hike on imported metal.
Century Aluminum stated Aug. 7 that it would invest $50 million to restart more than 50,000 metric tons of idled production at its Mount Holly smelting facility, aiming to bring the plant to full production for the first time in a decade.
The company's goal is to have the smelter, which currently operates at 75 percent capacity, reach full production levels by June 30, 2026.
The investment is expected to boost U.S. domestic aluminum production by nearly 10% and create approximately 100 new jobs in Berkeley County.
Officials attributed the restart to President Donald Trump's decision earlier this
