CHICAGO — The Chicago Park District is keeping some pools open through Labor Day to wrap up a summer gripped by heat waves.

The Park District will begin closing pools citywide Sunday as high school- and college-aged staffers — who make up nearly 70 percent of lifeguards — leave their jobs to hit the books.

Fifteen indoor and outdoor pools will close Sunday, and another 42 will close Aug. 17, according to a news release from the Park District. The latter was the closing date planned for the end of this season, marking the shortest swimming season since 2022. Chicago Public Schools open Aug. 18.

The city’s remaining 19 neighborhood pools — along with 22 beaches and Humboldt Park Beach, the city’s only inland beach — will now stay open through Labor Day, Sept. 1.
