After some adjustments with landscaping, lighting and concrete and stonework, the Bright Star Memorial is once again ready for visitors.

It opened in August 2024 for the fifth anniversary of the Aug. 31, 2019, mass shooting that left seven dead and 25 injured. The memorial is located off Loop 338 on the University of Texas Permian Basin campus.

The memorial was created by sculptor Jim Sanborn and has the names of the victims and a quote about them. When it is lit up at night the names and words about them are reflected onto the plaza.

The project had two parts, Project Manager David Wayland said. The memorial itself and the re-establishment of the short-grass prairie.
