A New York State Trooper was hospitalized after her patrol vehicle was struck during a traffic stop on I-87 in Albany County.
Trooper Kristen Sullivan was conducting a northbound traffic stop around 8:44 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, when a 2017 Subaru Forester hit the driver’s side of her vehicle, New York State Police said.
Sullivan suffered minor back and neck injuries and was taken to Albany Medical Center, where she was expected to be released later the same day.
An initial investigation found that the Subaru was traveling in the left lane when the driver swerved onto the left shoulder to avoid a tractor trailer changing lanes.
The driver over-corrected, lost control, and struck both the patrol car and the vehicle from the original traffic stop, police said.
The tractor trailer was located and stopped a short time later.
Sullivan was participating in the State Police’s Speed Awareness Week, a high-visibility enforcement campaign running through Sunday, Aug. 10.
The initiative, supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, is paired with the public safety message “Speeding Is No Game. You Don’t Get a Second Life,” which highlights the dangers of unsafe speed.
No other injuries were reported, and the crash remains under investigation.
