A lawyer is under investigation for allegedly passing drugs to an inmate during a prison visit earlier this week, state officials said Friday.

The Michigan Department of Corrections said it is not releasing the names of the lawyer or the inmate due to security concerns and the ongoing investigation.

Authorities said corrections officers and staff recovered the drugs on Monday after an attorney visited a client lodged at the Central Michigan Correctional Facility in St. Louis. The city is in Gratiot County and about 5 miles northeast of Alma.

The department said the lawyer was seen passing a package to the inmate.
