GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hyundai and Kia are no longer the most stolen cars. Research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute shows that a software upgrade closed a loophole for thieves.
Now, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the most stolen car. It's a cool muscle car, but it also may have a technical glitch that makes it easy to steal.
The list of the 2022 to 2024 vehicles with the highest claims for theft shows two Camaros in the top three, the ZL1 and the regular model. The Camaro ZL1 is stolen 39 times, the average for all vehicles.
The IIHS and the HDLI confirm General Motors began a service campaign in March of this year so Camaro owners could get a free software update at the dealer.
