RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) - The Russell County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam making the rounds this week.
Sheriff Heath Taylor says callers are pretending to be with the sheriff’s office, claiming the person missed a court date and must pay immediately. Taylor says it is a scam and urges anyone who receives one of these calls to hang up and never send money.
The sheriff’s office has received multiple reports over the past day.
Taylor says scammers often pull names of local law enforcement and judges from social media to make the calls sound more believable.
If you get one of these calls, officials say you should hang up and report it to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office.
