SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Sixteen new homes are expected to be finished by next summer as part of South Bend’s New Neighborhood Homes Initiative.

The multi-million-dollar initiative funds housing projects to redevelop vacant lots.

On Friday, the city broke ground on a plot of land right at Marion Street and Leland Avenue near downtown South Bend.

The plans are for 12 of the 16 homes to be income-restricted, meaning three-bedroom and four-bedroom homes can be leased for $1,600 to $1,800 a month.

“We did a request for proposals for vacant city land across the city,” said South Bend Mayor James Mueller. “The New Neighborhood Homes Initiative has new houses going in on these parcels across the city. Allen Edwin won the competitive process for this particular piece of land in this project.”
