Ahead of a gathering of California Democrats in favor of redistricting Friday, U.S. House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said she supports California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to redraw state congressional maps in response to similar efforts in Texas.
“The Republicans in the White House know that they’re going to lose, they know that. And so they have drawn the lines for Texas,” Pelosi said during a visit to San Francisco’s Veterans Affairs Medical Center Thursday. “We cannot unilaterally disarm. If that’s what they want to do, then we have to counter.”
States usually redraw their maps once per decade to reflect updated data from the U.S. census, but Texas legislators are working to pass redrawn maps this year. Democrats have said this plan is meant to help Republicans
